What is a good but somewhat cheap in price amp head that i can get for a 300 watt 4 ohm cabinet?
The first one that comes to mind is a Line 6 Spyder. Now that the Spyder III has come out, the Spyder II's are cheaper, and that seems like a good place to start.
Hmm. Well, let's take a look at Musiciansfriend listing of amp heads (first link).
Pass over all of the cheap tube amp heads. 5 tube watts isn't bad, but its not going to push 300 watts with enough headroom to get any appreciable clean volume. I like my Epiphone Valve Jr, but its not what you're looking for... you need more volume than that.
I'd say that the first one I'd look at would be the Fender Frontman head (second link). Its cheap, has a good clean tone, and will work well with pedals. Its not my ideal, necessarily, but its cheap and it will work. Add a few pedals and you should be just fine for now. And yes, that gives 100w at 4 ohms (3rd link).
Me myself, I use a Crate Powerblock. If you can find one of these, you'd pretty much be set... they're discontinued (effing tragic!), but for <200$ its hard to beat getting the equivalent of a 150w power amp the size of a lunch box!
Keep in mind that you aren't going to need much more in the way of wattage than that... for a tube amp, 30-60w is about the most you're going to reasonably want - that range is a good compromise between loud clean volumes and being able to push the amp into "tube mojo" territory.
