What is the best small (5 to 20 watt) valve guitar amplifier?
I am thinking of buying a 5 to 20 watt all valve electric guitar amp. I was thinking maybe a blackstar HT-5. I will be upgrading from a vox DA-20 and i want something which has valve tone and less of the modelling shit which the vox has, please help!
You are smart to take that path, solid state modeling amps sound like crap to me. It really depends on what you want to spend. I have 4 tube amps ranging from 4 watts to 15 watts. My VOX AC-4 is a great little practice amp, but not something you could gig with. I love this little amp if you are just looking for a practice amp, it runs about $250. I also have a Epiphone Valve Jr. that was my first tube amp. It sounds good for a $250 amp. It is 5 watts class A but much much louder than the 4 watt VOX. It is a good amp for the money but not spectacular. My Fender Princeton is by far my favorite. 15 watt class A power with incredible Fender tone and reverb, It is just under $900 I think. My last tube amp is the well known and respected Orange Tiny Terror half stack. This thing is a beast if you want an overdrive type tone. There is no need for distortion pedals with this baby, Just crank up the gain and it gets nasty fast. The TT runs around $1000. Another pretty good sounding amp is the new Marshall Class 5 which is about $500 I think.
