HELP! Epiphone Valve Junior Halfstack?
I have an Epiphone Valve Junior and it isn't loud enough.. how can i modify it to make it louder?
Two suggestions. First, run it through a bigger cab. I run mine through a 2x12, and I have no problems keeping up with my buddy, who plays a Marshall MG 100w half-stack.
Second, about the only real upgrade you can do to increase output is to upgrade the output transformer. This costs a fair chunk of change, but people swear by it.
Me, I'm more willing to just get another one and run my cab stereo than spend a few hundred on upgrading the one I have.
There's not much you can really do to increase the headroom (ie get cleaner sounds at louder volumes) without radically reworking the amp - it's only 5 watts, after all! But if you're willing to live with a little grit in your tone, then I figure using two at once would be as loud as it would ever need to be...
Google "epiphone valve jr mods". Some like swapping out the tubes, me, I run a really hot signal, and I've noticed that once they saturate, the types of tubes don't really matter quite so much.... when you hit the wall, you get a certain quality of sound, and not much you're going to do (besides swap out the output transformer, etc) will change that.
Good luck!
Saul
