What does the 4Ohm Impedance on my tube guitar output jack mean?
I have an old Traynor Guitar Amp 2x12 Combo 100W. It has a 4Ohm output jack on the back...What does the 4 Ohm impedance/resistance really mean? How does this apply to Ohms Law? What would happen if I plugged in say an 8Ohm Cabinet for extra volume??? Hope someone can help! Thx
That means if you choose to add a speaker cabinet you should make sure it is a 4 ohm impedance.
Using an 8 ohm cabinet will reduce the efficiency by 1/2, and using a 16 ohm cabinet will reduce it by 7/8...meaning that it will be putting out only 1/8 of the original power!
If you were to go the other way- to a 2 ohm cabinet- you may end up blowing the amp.
Adding speakers does not increase volume, it only improves clarity and frequency response making it SEEM louder sometimes.
