Mixing in Pro Tools LE?
I have a basic home studio setup with Pro Tools LE. I have recorded drums, bass, 3 guitars, and 1 vocal track for a rock song. I do not have much experience mixing and was wondering how to get the best sound. Should I pan certain tracks? How can I use reverb and delay on the vocals to get a bigger sound? Whenever I add effects it always seems like to much and I can't figure out to make them sound good. I am just looking for the basics and was wondering if someone could help me out.
A very BASIC mix layout would be.
Panned in the Center.
Kick Drum
Bass
Vocals
Panned slightly left or right
Snare
High Hat
some guitars
Toms (pan them almost as they are located i.e. smaller tom more in the center and move away from center with each tom)
Hard left or Right panning
Drum over head mics
some guitar
effects
reverbs
delays
This is where you get creative and can put just about anything and see how you like it. Just make sure your mix is not "leaning" to one side too much.
Effects and Reverbs
Create a bunch of Aux tracks and set their Inputs to a bus
add a different delay one each of the first couple tracks and a different reverb on each of the last couple.
In you recorded tracks add a send and set it to one of your aux tracks (Bus 1 , bus 2 etc....)
Play with the levels and experiment and see what you like.
also import one of favorite songs into the session and listen to how a professional pans and effects the different tracks. Try to copy what they do and once you figure it out add your style to it and go from there.
Good Luck
