Will i ruin a Fender guitar amp if i play too loud?
One of my teachers borrowed his brothers guitar amp. It's an old Fender from the 70's-80's i'm guessing. It's very awsome and is classic. All though i'm very affraid to ruin. The point is i'm doing a gig, and will be preforming for about 3-400 people, so it will have to play quite loud. I can't remember how many watts it is, but it's not that big. (2,5x1,5 feet or something like that.) I really don't wanna mess it up. Is there a chance of that happening? Besides it has to "warm up" so i can't really turn it on and play right away.
(I think it is a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe 112 Tweed)
All tube amps require a warm up period while the filaments in the tubes come up to operating temperature. About a minute or so is all you really need to let it warm up though...it's not like we're talking hours here.
Those Hot Rod Deluxe amps will get surprisingly loud. However, with just one 12" speaker, the sound will not be very well dispersed. In other words, you're going to have a "beaming" effect where if you're standing in front of the amp you get your hair parted. Step to either side, and you can barely hear it.
As to whether you'll damage it or not, it depends on how loud you're talking. If we're talking folk band, you might be OK. If we're talking black-death-grind-impale-turdgurgle-speed metal, then probably not.
If you max the amp out, you could damage the speaker (if you're using too much bass). Or, if the tubes are old one of them could arc over (and take come additional components with it).
If your playing for that many people, I hope that you will have a PA system there. If so, your best bet is to mic the amp up and run it through the PA system. This will give you the dispersion you need and keep the stage volume down so the vocalists have a better chance of hearing themselves.
Short of that, find a bigger amp. And even then, I'd mic it up through the PA.
Good luck.
