Looking to upgrade my Fender bass pickups, need a p/j combo, which do you all recommend?
I play a Korean built Fender P/J combo with active electronics. Although, I don't use the little preamp anymore since I now run it through a Line 6 Bass Pod Pro. It is pretty nice and plays well, but would benefit from a pickup upgrade. Anyway, just wondering what pickups fellow bassists out there have used when they were ready to upgrade. Any advice on the ease of installation and other potential problems/features is much appreciated.
You should go with EMG pickups they do sell them in "P-J" packages. The last time I saw them they ran you $179 with pots and all. However you get what you pay for in the pickup world. Legendary bassists such as Victor Wooten and Les Claypool use them. Last year I made a fretless bass from scratch and used EMG J-sets. http://www.emginc.com/products/category/24. The installation can be done by a guitar shop... or if you know how to solder and understand basic wiring it is easy enough
